what is religion?

25 02 2010

i ran across this verse today, and i just had to share it…

paul, while speaking to the people of athens, said that God has acted throughout history so “that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us [...]“. religion is our attempt to grope and reach and find God.

so, instead of treating people like they are infidels or stupid, why don’t we treat them like they are people who are searching for God and haven’t found him yet, though “He is not far from each one of us”.

just a thought…

Do you think that religion is our attempt to grope and reach and find God? Or do you think that religion is our attempt to appease a God that has already found us that we often refuse to recognize … though deep inside we know He is out there somewhere?

i’m going to have to say a little of both. i think God is remarkably close to each one of us, but we are so conditioned to EARN everything (relationships and rewards) that we cannot accept that He is there with no catch. so, we grope around to find this God. then, when we find Him, instead of accepting His nearness as our good, we try to earn His nearness…
